Endings – saying goodbye to a client

Last Thursday evening saw one of the clients I’ve been seeing for her final visit – our 15th session. We had discussed the previous week that this would be her last session. Her choice, which we both felt comfortable with. There was a lot of enthusiasm from her regrading going out on her own. Some nervousness, but overall a feeling of the time being right. It was a sense of we had travelled as far together as she felt was needed. Time to venture on her own.
I expected to feel, well, not sure what I expected … there is a kind of satisfied, contented feeling, that she feels strong enough to continue her life journey without me. Is that not what counselling is about – being with a client as they find themselves, develop an awareness of themselves, being more themselves, being able to be as they want , wish and desire to be?
